Ruqyah Shar'iyyah is often surrounded by dramatic stories, symptom lists and the idea that a person needs a specialist with unusual abilities. The Qur'an and authentic Sunnah give a clearer foundation.

Ruqyah is a permissible means of seeking Allah's protection and healing. The Qur'an is shifa,

self-ruqyah is established in the Sunnah, lawful treatment is permitted, and no raqi possesses

independent power to heal.

“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.” - Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26:80

Is Ruqyah Part of Islam?

Yes. Ruqyah is established in the authentic Sunnah. A Companion recited Surah Al-Fatihah as ruqyah for a man who had been stung, and the Prophet ﷺ approved it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5736).

The Prophet ﷺ also recited Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blew lightly into his hands and wiped over his body before sleeping (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). Ruqyah is therefore not merely a cultural practice; it has a clear Prophetic basis.

What Is Ruqyah Shar'iyyah?

Ruqyah Shar'iyyah is permissible Islamic ruqyah using the Qur'an, authentic supplications and

permissible words while seeking protection or healing from Allah. 'Awf ibn Malik reported that

the Prophet ﷺ said there is no harm in ruqyah so long as it contains no shirk (Sahih Muslim

Its foundation is therefore Tawheed, Qur'anic recitation, authentic du'a, dhikr, reliance upon

Allah and avoidance of shirk. Ruqyah is a means; Allah is the One who heals.

Is the Entire Qur'an Shifa (Healing)?

Yes. Ruqyah is not restricted to a small list of so-called 'ruqyah verses'. Allah says: 'We send

down the Qur'an as a healing and mercy for the believers' (Surah Al-Isra' 17:82). Allah also

describes revelation as 'a healing for what is in the hearts' (Surah Yunus 10:57) and says of the Qur'an, 'It is a guide and a healing for those who believe' (Surah Fussilat 41:44).

Scholars including Ibn al-Qayyim explained that the stronger interpretation of Al-Isra' 17:82

applies the description of shifa to the Qur'an as a whole. Muslims should therefore not believe that healing is confined to a handful of passages commonly labelled 'Ruqyah Ayat'.

Why Do Raqis Recite Different Surahs and Verses?

Certain recitations have specific evidence, including Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas. At the same time, the whole Qur'an is shifa, so a raqi is not restricted to a tiny fixed list.

Some experienced raqis have preferred passages based on their meanings, practical

experience, and methods learned from their teachers and earlier teachers. A raqi may say that his teacher taught him to recite certain verses in a particular circumstance and continue that method.

The important distinction is between experience and revelation. A preferred sequence learned from a teacher does not automatically become Sunnah. It should not be attributed to the Prophet as a specific prescription without authentic evidence, and no practitioner should be treated as ﷺ if he possesses secret verses with independent power.

Can I Perform Ruqyah on Myself?

Yes. Self-ruqyah is firmly established. 'Aishah reported that the Prophet ﷺ would bring his

palms together, recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blow lightly into them and wipe over as

much of his body as possible, repeating this three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).

A Muslim does not need to believe that only an ustaz or professional raqi can perform ruqyah. A knowledgeable practitioner may guide and assist, but healing belongs to Allah.

How Do I Perform Self-Ruqyah at Home?

Begin with Tawakkul: Allah is Ash-Shafi, the One who heals. Recite Al-Fatihah, whose use as

ruqyah was approved by the Prophet ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5736). Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and you may recite other parts of the Qur'an because the Qur'an as a whole is shifa.

Following the Prophetic example, you may blow lightly into your hands and wipe over

yourself. Make authentic du'a for healing, including: 'Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adhhib al-ba's,

washfi Anta ash-Shafi...' - O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal; You are the

Healer.

Remain consistent with Salah, Qur'an, morning and evening adhkar, authentic du'a,

repentance and obedience. Ruqyah should strengthen a Muslim's relationship with Allah, not

create dependency upon a practitioner.

What Can Ruqyah Be Used For?

The Sunnah establishes ruqyah in circumstances that include physical illness and harm.

Muslims also seek ruqyah in relation to 'ayn (evil eye), hasad (envy), sihr (magic), concerns about jinn, pain, fear, distress and spiritual unease.

However, symptoms do not by themselves prove sihr, 'ayn or jinn disturbance. Anxiety,

fatigue, headaches, nightmares, sleep paralysis, insomnia, pain and relationship difficulties can have many explanations. Ruqyah should not become a method of confidently diagnosing the unseen.

Similarly, crying, tiredness, heaviness, trembling or discomfort during ruqyah do not by

themselves prove possession, sihr or 'ayn. Bodily and emotional reactions can have multiple

explanations.

How Can I Tell Whether a Ruqyah Practitioner Is Legitimate?

The Prophet ﷺ gave a fundamental boundary: ruqyah is permissible so long as it contains no shirk (Sahih Muslim 2200). Be cautious of calling upon jinn, seeking help from unseen beings, talismans, amulets, mysterious symbols, unknown incantations, invoking anyone besides Allah, claims of independent supernatural power, guaranteed diagnoses or guaranteed cures.

A practitioner reciting Qur'an does not automatically make every other practice permissible.

At Al-Falah Fil Quran, the approach centres on Qur'an, authentic Sunnah, du'a, dhikr, Tawheed and reliance upon Allah, without amulets, talismans or charms.

Can Muslims Use Modern Medicine Together With Ruqyah?

Yes. Ruqyah and modern medicine do not have to compete. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged

seeking treatment. Usamah ibn Sharik reported that when people asked whether they should seekmedical treatment, the Prophet ﷺ told them to seek treatment (Sunan Abi Dawud 3855). Abu Hurairah also narrated that Allah did not send down a disease except that He sent down its cure (Sahih al-Bukhari 5678).

Using lawful medicine is therefore not shirk. A Muslim may take antibiotics when appropriate,

pain relief, blood-pressure medication, insulin, psychiatric medication, sleep treatment, surgery, physiotherapy or other legitimate care while believing that Allah ultimately grants healing. Allahsays: 'And when I am ill, it is He who cures me' (Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26:80).

Does Modern Medicine Deal With the Ghaib?

Modern medicine primarily investigates what can be observed, measured, tested and studied: hormones, blood chemistry, infection, inflammation, organ function, neurological conditions, sleep disorders and psychological or psychiatric conditions. The ghaib belongs to a different category. Islamic belief in angels, jinn, 'ayn, sihr and the Hereafter comes from revelation, not laboratory measurement.

These categories do not need to be placed in conflict. A doctor can investigate a physical

mechanism without making a claim about the unseen. A Muslim can believe in the unseen without rejecting medical explanations. Likewise, a raqi should not tell a person with persistent physical or mental-health symptoms to avoid appropriate medical assessment simply because a spiritual cause is suspected.

Can a Physical Symptom Have a Medical Explanation Even While I Am Doing

Ruqyah?

Absolutely. Difficulty sleeping, for example, should not automatically be interpreted as

evidence of jinn or sihr. Sleep is influenced by many biological, psychological and environmental processes. Melatonin is one hormone involved in regulating the body's sleep-wake cycle, and clinicians may use melatonin or other treatments in appropriate circumstances depending on thecause of a person's sleep problem.

Treating a biological mechanism does not contradict Ruqyah Shar'iyyah. Allah created the

body and its mechanisms, and lawful treatment is a permissible means. A person can seek medical assessment while continuing Qur'an, du'a, adhkar and self-ruqyah.

Should I Choose Between a Doctor and a Raqi?

It does not always have to be one or the other. Persistent insomnia, headaches, panic attacks, pain, fatigue, mood changes or unusual sensations may warrant appropriate medical or psychological assessment. At the same time, a Muslim may continue authentic self-ruqyah and

du'a. If a medical cause is found, treat it. Continue making du'a and relying upon Allah. Do not stop prescribed medication merely because you have begun ruqyah; some medicines can be harmful if stopped suddenly. Questions about medication should be discussed with an appropriate

healthcare professional.

What Happens During a Ruqyah Consultation in Singapore?

A responsible consultation should begin by listening, educating and explaining authentic Ruqyah Shar'iyyah rather than immediately declaring a supernatural diagnosis. Al-Falah Fil Quran by MyQuranPro begins with a private consultation and guided self-ruqyah, helping the person understand Qur'anic recitation, authentic du'a and reliance upon Allah.

If concerns continue after a sincere period of self-ruqyah, in-person assistance may be discussed where appropriate. The aim is guidance and assistance, not creating dependence upon a practitioner. For current Ruqyah Service & Consultation details, visit:
